Farmers’ Generosity  Grows,

Despite Drought

Although farmers across New England are struggling with one of the worst droughts in 20 years, our refrigerators are bursting with beautiful produce, donated by our generous farm partners.

In fact, we’ve received almost 5,000 more pounds of donated produce compared to this time last year! This increase is thanks to the generosity of local farms and food purveyors like Community Harvest Project, Land’s Sake Farms, Lovin’ Spoonfuls, The Food Project, Farmer Dave’s, and others. Through these partnerships, we receive food that remains unsold or left in the fields, that would otherwise go to waste. Our talented kitchen staff puts the donated produce to good use, creating nutritious food for our clients.

Even with water irrigation systems, periods of little to no rain can yield very small crops or cause entire crops to fail. However, our farm partners remain committed to providing healthy fruits and vegetables; to those in need

“Even in the face of so much adversity, we have been able to provide abundance,” said Farmer Dave

Support local farms by purchasing their produce and groceries. For a list of our partners, visit our website.

Farmer Dave’s Barley Greek Salad

Our friend and partner, Farmer Dave’s, shares recipes showcasing local produce that can be found at farmers markets and in their weekly CSA share.

For this recipe, Farmer Dave takes traditional

Greek salad to a new level by adding bold flavors

from pickled cucumbers, mint, and barley – a cereal

grain that’s high in fiber. Read on.

Community Servings’ Founder

Honored at Garden Party

David Waters, CEO & Andy Olem,  brother of the late  Wayne Olem

We proudly honored Wayne Olem in memoriam with our 2016 LifeSavor Award at our annual Summer Garden Party. The award was given to his family in recognition of Wayne’s leadership role in the founding of Community Servings 26 years ago.

Wayne was a gay man living with HIV during the darkest days of the epidemic, in the early 1990s. His advocacy led to the mobilization of the Jewish community around HIV and the role of proper nutrition, which ultimately led to the creation of Community Servings. He served on the first board of Community Servings until his death in 1994.

“Wayne’s early leadership and advocacy continues to inspire us 26 years later to continue to grow our mission and impact. I was delighted to welcome so many members of Wayne’s family to my home to accept this special honor,” said David Waters.
